Developing you as a Researcher

We aim to synthesise the real world research environment and this year a new addition to our meetings will be a short journal review session at the start of a meeting, every second-month. Here we can all praise/critique elements of a paper published in a high impact journal, a skill required in any research profession. Attendance is of this session is of course optional, especially around deadlines.

Something we trialled last year was inviting members of the department to speak about their experiences in summer research programmes/ internships. We hope to continue this again this year, alternating these brief talks with the journal reviews. It also means less experienced students can gain advice on how to secure placements in the future.

On a weekly basis, we normally begin with a 5 minute presentation that leads us into our meeting. This is a great way to get used to summarising short review articles, in an area of your own interest and presenting them! We hope everyone will get the chance to present at some point during the year as it develops communication- a key skill of public engagement within medical research.

Finally, actually planning, proposing, gaining funding, carrying out and presenting your research. This is the best way to develop you as a researcher and this is the core focus of our meetings and outside of meetings.

Departments

Find out how you can become involved and carry out your own research project by joining one or several of the EUYSRA departments!

The medicine department meets in David Hume Tower, room LG 08, on Monday at 19:30.

The medicine department of EUYSRA has developed rapidly since its creation back in 2012. Initially we started as a group of 7 individuals and now we’re > 20 students. This makes us one of the slightly larger groups in the society. The opportunity to develop laboratory skills, surveying skills and public engagement skills in an area of your own interest, outside the university curriculum, makes EUYSRA novel among Edinburgh University’s Societies and the medicine department fully supports this.

As a department we value every member’s contribution to our department and this is reflected in our weekly presentations, where everyone has the chance to present articles they find interesting. This really is a place where every member can voice their opinion or bring a new idea to the table for us to further explore as a group. As such we encourage collaboration on projects with other EUYSRA departments and so you can expect to broaden your skill set, outside the boundaries of medical science.

It is probably fair to say that as a department we are one of the most social and enjoy nights out together, as well as end of term celebrations – acknowledging what we as a department and our individual members have achieved so far.
