About

The “Edinburgh University Young Scientific Researchers Association” (EUYSRA) is an acting catalyst for undergraduate scientific innovation and research development.

EUYSRA encourages undergraduates of science related degrees to pursue and develop original and independent research. This is done by working in teams consisting of people of similar academic backgrounds with the possibilities of cross departmental cooperation, thereby allowing valuable skills and appreciations for scientific research to be gained.

The Committee

EUYSRA is run by a handful of dedicated students from all years of study across all fields of study.

It is the committee's duty to uphold, develop and propel the visionary mission of student led research and ensure smooth operations of all activities.

The Research

Developing and carrying out small scale degree independent research projects is the primary objective of EUYSRA.

On a bi-annual basis funding is provided to the teams from all departments, gearing them towards the end of year poster session and competition.

The Departments

EUYSRA is a platform for undergraduate research, but channels the research areas by scientific fields. These fields have become known as "Departments" and are the collective hub for brainstorming and coordinating the reseaarch to be carried out by members. Departments include:

Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, IT, Medicine, Physics, and Psychology.

The Fund Management

The Fund is responsible for securing the additional financial resources outside of membership fees for EUYSRA.

These roles include, but are not limited to, securing corporate sponsorship, on campus fund raising, and spreading awareness of EUYSRA on and off campus.

The Events

EUYSRA organises multiple meetings a week ranging from:

The Main Meeting, Department Meetings, Socials, and Philthropic Activities.

"The enthusiasm shared by my members and I make the education  journey fulfilling and value-added."

Jonathan Jung
Head of Medicine 2012/2013

The way EUYSRA projects differ from a regular assigned lab to be performed for a course is that the members develop and dictate the terms of their own experiments by pursuing team generated ideas. Through the brainstorming and development of experimental ideas as members of teams (usually formed within a department), templates for small scale scientific research experiments become formed, which are then presented to the research committee who evaluate whether or not to proceed with the research having considered the cost and time to be spent on each project. If acknowledged by the research committee, a team will be allocated to one of the many laboratories available to the society. Whilst under the supervision of a lab supervisor, the teams will learn about research conduct, presentation and discussion of experimental results (which later become published on the society web page).

Members can join one or several departments as listed below:

  • Biology

  • Chemistry

  • Engineering

  • IT

  • Medicine

  • Physics/Mathematics

  • Psychology

These departments serve as platforms for members to brainstorm and develop their experiments in familiar academic environments, whilst being guided and organized by the department head. Here they may find that an experiment is not limited to a certain academic field and may require assistance from another department (i.e. a joint engineering and medical venture) which allows for cross departmental cooperation.

If there is sufficient amounts of interest in creating a new department, then we would be happy to initiate such a department.

The society, whilst primarily acting as a catalyst for scientific innovation and hands on experimentation, is at the same time a highly academic society which aims to broaden the scientific knowledge of its members through presentations of fellow members or guest speakers whilst also being enticing with lively debates.

"I have especially enjoyed the wide range of nationalities and therefore cultures our society attracts."

Till Sereny
Social Secretary 2012/2013

"EUYSRA enhances the personal development of all its members."

Eleanor Drinkwater
Head of Biology 2011/2012

Through participation in the society, members will gain valuable skills relating to research conduct and team work skills (which become highly attractive when applying for internships), and will be greatly encouraged to take an innovative approach to developing new and exciting experiments.

The society meets on Wednesday, in Lecture Theatre G.03, 50 George Square from 18:30-19:30 starting from September 17th!. This will be the location and the time of all future meeting (unless otherwise specified).
