Position Details:

It is the duty of the department head to help individuals or groups to formulate their idea for a research proposition by helping them prepare their presentation to be given to the society, all done within the department meeting which the head will chair and organize. It is also the department heads responsibility to assist any members of his/her department to prepare any presentation which that member wishes to give to the society. The department head is the one who brings forward the research proposals to the Head of Research who in turn informs the secretary of all research applications.

Personal Details:
In my first year at Edinburgh in 2012 I only attended the weekly lectures that EUYSRAprovides. I found these really interesting and exciting. I got me interested in subjects beyond the scope of my discipline and syllabus and made me aware of the opportunities I could create for myself.

In my second year I joined the Engineering Departments as having heard about the research projects through the weekly meetings this was something I really wanted to be involved in, despite the fact I did not have an idea of my own. This year I have been lucky enough to be part of two research groups, one into the durability of papercrete and the other into the fire-safety issues of storing plastic bags under your sink. I have learnt and developed so much throughout this year, in confidence, presentation and speaking skills, research skills as well as
the thinking skills to be an effective researcher or scientist. And all this has enabled me to get my internship this summer.

I wanted to be head of engineering to be part of giving other students these opportunities as they are invaluable, and not available at every university.
